1000-lb Sisterswas originally meant to be a show that chronicled the lives of sistersTammyandAmy Slaton,as they tried to lose weight and get their lives back on track. But over the years, fans have become just asinvested in the sisters’ personal livesas they are in health updates. The show has expanded to feature the full spectrum of the Slaton family dynamics, which includesexplosive arguments, emotional meltdowns, and their signature outlandish behavior.

Every member of the family brings their own flairto the show, and that’s what makes it so entertaining. Fans get to see why Amy and Tammy are the way they are and how their family dynamics affect theirweight loss journey. But what no one really saw coming was the sisters’ foray into a whole other realm. In the more recent seasons of1000-lb Sisters,Amy and Tammy seem to have convinced themselves that they havea connection to the spiritual dimension. But what’s worse is that they keep trying to convince everyone else, too!

The Haunted Painting in London Allegedly Awakened Something in the Slaton Sisters

During a December 2024 episode of1000-lb Sisters, the Slaton family embarked on a haunted tourduring their trip to London. When the family was presented with a chance toview a haunted paintingat one of their stops, Tammy and Amy couldn’t say yes fast enough. WhileChrisandBrittany Combschose to opt out of the experience, Amy claimed that shewould even touch this supposedly cursed paintingbecause she simply wasn’t scared.

However, the minute the painting was brought out for them, Tammy started claiming thatthere was something wrong with it.The reality starpractically jumped at the sight of the art piece and kept saying that it had bad energy. Their sister,Amanda Halterman, was right there with them, and she didn’t seem to feel anything at all. But the way Amy and Tammy were reacting, it was as if they were actually seeing a ghost. Then, out of nowhere, Amyshouted the name “Sarah Elizabeth”and claimed that it was the painter’s name. She said the name kept popping in her head, so it must be true.

Maybe Their Sixth Sense Is Just Common Sense

No one seemed to take Tammy and Amy seriously, but they just didn’t care. To them, no one understood the spiritual connection they had formed with this cursed art piece. From a longtime fan’s perspective, the idea ofthe Slaton sistersbecoming self-proclaimed psychics feels rather normal since these two havealways leaned into the outrageous. But it’s important to approach these moments in the show with a healthy dose of skepticism. In all honesty, their sudden realizations about the painting could have just beenfleeting thoughts that pretty much everyone experiences.Just because something pops into your head doesn’t mean it’s a spirit sending you a message. It’s literally just what it means to have a brain and think.

The Haunted Dolls Are Extremely Creepy and Unhealthy

Tammy’s husband, Caleb Willingham, passed away in June 2023, and of course, Tammy was a grieving mess after the tragedy. While it’s completely normal not to act rationally after having gone through a loss like this, the way Tammy chose to deal with the absence of her husband was really strange. During the first episode of1000-lb SistersSeason 6, Tammy and Amy use Tammy’s infamous haunted dolls to summon Willingham’s spirit. The moment in the show didn’t sit well with anyone, since it felt like Tammy was resorting to an extremely unhealthy way to get some closure.

During the whole thing, Tammy claimed that her dolls, Boonie and Jacob, connected her and Amy to the spirit world. But that wasn’t it. Tammy then proceeded to talk about an app that they used to talk to spirits. The sisters immediately got to work and started using their app to talk to Willingham’s spirit. The entire thing was uncomfortable to watch as the reality stars grasped at straws to convince themselves that theyreally were communicating with ghosts. Not to mention their constant claims of being able to feel when a spirit was near them. What’s even more unbelievable is that the phone app suddenly played a voice saying, “I’m here.” Of course, Tammy took that as a sign thatCaleb was watching over her.

For starters, there’s no way a phone app has the ability to do actual Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP), which are sounds captured on electronic recordings that are believed to be spirit voices. If the sisters had used a radio or actual ghost-hunting equipment, this might have been a little more believable. Sincephone apps are pretty much programmedto do what you want them to, there’s no way this is their portal to the other realm. Not to mention thatprofessional mediums don’t use technologyto talk to the dead, so there’s no way Amy or Tammy are doing it.

Choosing a Psychic Over a Therapist Is Damaging

During1000-lb SistersSeason 2, Amy and Tammyvisit a psychic for the first timeto seek answers for their life’s struggles. What’s funny is that back then, the sisters approached the psychic with a lot of skepticism. But since then, they’ve done a complete 180. While seeking guidance from someone with a supposedconnection to the spiritual worldmight seem harmless, relying on it for actual mental health help is not the best idea. The fact that Tammy refuses to work through her issues in therapy, and is more than happy to go to a psychic and ask her questions like:“Should I getweight loss surgery?” just doesn’t make sense.

Tammy’s sudden friendship with psychicHaley Michellehas also sparked a lot of controversy. The two quickly became inseparable, but with Michele also serving as Tammy’s spiritual guide, this friendship feels way too convenient for the cameras. All in all, the fact that the sisters are choosing to put their faith in something that, at best, isa form of escapisminstead ofseeking professional helpis a major disservice to their fans.
