The initial 2019 Cannes Film Festival lineup has been revealed. While more titles may be added at a later date, this first burst of films is quite promising, including new work fromTerrence Malick(his German-language wartime dramaA Hidden Life),Jim Jarmusch(the zombie satireThe Dead Don’t Die),Bong Joon ho(Parasite), andPedro Almodovar(Pain and Glory). The most high-profile debut currently set is directorDexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopicRocketman, whileQuentin Tarantino’sOnce Upon a Time in Hollywoodis not yet ready—although festival directorThierry Frémauxnoted during his press conference that he hopes the film will be ready in time to premiere, and there are still several films under consideration.

13 of the 19 films announced today are directed by women, including four in competition—an improvement over last year’s male-dominated lineup. Those include the animated featureThe Swallos of Kabulfrom directorsZabou BreitmanandEléa Gobé Mévellec, directorJessica Hausnersci-fi filmLittle Joe, andMati Diop’s narrative debutAtlantics.
