Colman Domingo’s eclectic filmography continues to grow with the upcoming Netflix filmRustin. The actor will portray civil rights activistBayard Rustinin the new movie by theater and film directorGeorge C. Wolfe. This will mark the second collaboration between Domingo and Wolfe, who have previously worked together onMa Rainey’s Black Bottom.Rustinwill also continue the multi-year deal between Netflix and Higher Ground, the production company founded byBarackandMichelle Obama.
Domingo is not the only actor already slated for the project.Chris RockandAudra McDonaldare also signed onto the film in major roles. Rock will portray former NAACP directorRoy Wilkins, while McDonald will portray activistElla Baker. Returning fromMa RaineyisGlynn Turman, who will play unionist and politicianA. Philip Randolph. Needless to say, the cast for this project is stacked.
Wolfe will co-write the film withDustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter ofMilkwho is also currently adaptingUnder The Banner of Heavenfor FX.Bruce Cohenis slated to produce the project alongside Higher Ground’sTonia Davis.Alex G. Scottand Higher Ground producerMark R. Wrightwill serve as executive producers to the film.

Rustinwill be the first feature film produced by Higher Ground, having previously presentedFatherhoodandWorthfor its streaming partner. Other upcoming projects from the company expected to be released through Netflix include the adaptation ofMohsin Hamid’s 2017 novelExit West, which will be also be produced byAnthonyandJoe Russoand will starRiz Ahmed.
