20th Century Fox has revealed a new trailer for the upcomingX-MenmovieDark Phoenix. The film hails from writer/producerSimon Kinberg, who also makes his directorial debut on the 90s-setX-Men: Apocalypsefollow-up. The sequel adapts the famous Dark Phoenix comics arc, withSophie Turnerfilling the role of Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix whileJessica Chastainplays a mysterious (and perhaps otherworldly) character.
Right off, this trailerreallywants us to think Jean kills Mystique, between the “why did you make me do that, she was my friend” line and the classic rain-drenched funeral shot that happens every time a comic book character dies. (Truth be told, I don’t think Jennifer Lawrence would mind this development too much, either.) But I’m not sure that’s the type of twist you give away in the trailer, so I’m deeming it Marketing Fuckery. [UPDATE:Uh,nevermind. Nothing matters!]

So whatdowe get? It feels like the hype is pretty low in the fandom-sphere forDark Phoenixbetween the inconsistency of the franchise as a whole and this being the last X-Men film before Disney swallows 20th Century Fox. But I just don’t think we can completely rule out any movie where Sophie Turner transforms into an outer-space death god. There’s absolutely nothing we haven’t already seen from an X-Men movie in this trailer—besides maybe Charles Xavier miraculously saying “There’s still good in you, Jean” instead of “There’s still good in you, Erik”—but for one last ride filled with sloppy, big-budget mutant madness? A celestial Sansa Stark absolutely merking a train full of goons isn’t a terrible away to spend two hours.

The film also seesMichael Fassbenderreturn as Magneto alongside Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Red Lotus (Andrew Stehlin), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Selene (Kota Eberhardt). Main players Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) return.Dark Phoenixarrives in theaters on June 7th.

With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together.
