On August 20, Florence + The Machine releasedtheir brand new single, “Everybody Scream”, which is alsothe title of their sixth studio album, set for release this Halloween. The band’s frontwoman,Florence Welch, excitedly announced the brand new single and album on her social media a few days before, andthe single was released yesterday.
For the past two years, Welch wrote and producedEverybody Screamwith Idles’Mark Bowen, The National’sAaron Dessner, and alternative and indie singerMitski. The upcoming album follows the band’s 2022 albumDance Fever, which is a different concept from whatEverybody Screamwill offer. After two years of producing and writingEverybody Scream, the album will be all yours in just a few months, and it will marka brand new and exquisite chapterin Florence + The Machine’s music.
Florence + The Machine’s “Everybody Scream” Explores Witchy Themes
“Everybody Scream” marks an epic new chapter for the band, as it explores eerie themes that are different to their past work.NMEreported that the album,Everybody Scream, is inspired bywitchcraft and mysticism, which stems from a challenging moment for Welch on Florence + The Machine’sDance Fevertour. Welch underwent lifesaving surgery during the tour, andstarted looking into spiritual mysticism and folk horror, while questioning what it means to be “healed”.
Other themes thatEverybody Screamwill explore arewomanhood, partnership, ageing, and dying. These themes will be covered in 12 songs and four bonus tracks in ‘Chamber Versions’ of the CD and vinyl editions. Florence + The Machine’sEverybody Screamwill also have a ‘Bloodwood Edition’ of the cassette that will feature a different cover.
On Instagram, Welch has been teasing the new chapter for the band for a few weeks. On August 7, she posted a carousel to her 2.4 million followers that included a folk horror anthology and an ambiguous post that tells of women who had been “waiting to meet you” and “it’s only a matter of time.” On August 11, she posted a video of herself digging in a field, before she looked down into a hole, and started screaming. With content teasing new music and the release of the new single,Florence + The Machine are officially back.
Florence + The Machine Released a Music Video for “Everybody Scream”
Just 18 hours after releasing the music video for “Everybody Scream,”it had already achieved over 400,000 views, indicating that many fans had been eagerly awaiting Florence + The Machine’s return. The music video begins with Welch walking on the field, soon to be joined by four women in dark clothing, who seemed to represent witches. Screams can be heard in the song as Welch sings about the entity that takes over. She commands people to scream, sing, and dance,which almost sounds like a spell.
Everybody Screamis more than just a witchy era for the band. With the release of the new single, Welch is now reborn, having survived a life-saving surgery during theDance Fevertour.Everybody Screamallows her to explorethe true meaning of healingby exploring witchcraft and mysticism, and also heal from the life-altering experience.
