This summer will bring plenty of action spectacles and superheroes, but the season is also rife with big-studio comedies, fromMike and Dave Need Wedding DatestoPopstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Towards the top of the list is the long-gestating remake ofGhostbusters, the 1984 classic that gathered the comedic dream team ofBill Murray,Harold Ramis, andDan Aykroyd, with major assists fromErnie Hudson,Rick Moranis,Sigourney Weaver, andAnnie Potts. The new version will feature the likes ofMelissa McCarthy,Kristen Wiig,Leslie Jones, andKate McKinnon, and though its got a lot of work to do to live up to the clout of the original, the trailers and information we’ve received thus far has been very promising.
Those of us who are looking for a good reminder about what made the original such a unique blast of phantasmagorical humor could just pick up the Blu-ray, but Fathom Events and BBQ Films are planning something even better. On June 8th and 12th, Fathom will be bringing the original back to theaters across the nation, with over 750 theaters participating in the return engagement. BBQ Filmsis planning something a bit more extravagant. On June 8th, 9th, and 10th, the company will be creating an immersive experience for fans of Egon, Venkman, and Stantz at Brooklyn’s Villain, one that includes proton-packs and a fully decorated Ghostbusters HQ in which to view the film. There will even be some ghosts flying around apparently, along with training with Ghostbusters gear, consultations with ghost-sighting experts, adult ecto-beverages, limited edition posters, and commemorative gifts. It sounds like a blast, and exactly the kind of thing Williamsburg, Brooklyn, despite its reputation as the most obnoxiously pretentious place on the planet Earth, is famous for.
As for the remake, it will be hitting theaters nationwide on July 17th…without the adult beverages.
