Fresh off working with Netflix on the romantic comedySomeone Greatand the animated seriesCarmen Sandiego, Golden Globe winnerGina Rodriguezis set to star in the streamer’s post-apocalyptic thrillerAwake, Collider has learned.
InAwake, a sudden global event wipes out all electronics and takes away humankind’s ability to sleep. As chaos begins to consume the world, only Jill (Rodriguez), an ex-solider with a troubled past, holds the key to a cure – her own daughter, Matilda. Can Jill save the worldandher daughter before she loses her mind?

Mark Raso(Kodachrome) is set to direct from a script he co-wrote with his brother,Joseph Raso, as well asGreg Poirer. The Raso siblings will also executive produce along with Rodriguez.Awakehails from production company eOne and will likely debut on Netflix at some point next year.
Paul Schiff(Rushmore) will produceAwake, which will also be executive produced byMark Gordon,Josh Phillips,Matt Jackson,Greg PoirierandWhitney Brown.Joanne Leewill serve as a co-executive producer. Production is expected to start later this summer.

Best known for her beloved turn onJane the Virgin, Rodriguez most recently starred in Sony’s English-language remake of the 2011 crime dramaMiss Bala. She can currently be seen in the well-reviewed Netflix rom-comSomeone Great, which co-starsBrittany Snow,DeWanda WiseandLakeith Stanfield. Netflix picked up a second season ofCarmen Sandiegoback in February, but there’s no word on when it will debut on the streaming service. Rodriguez is also set to reprise the fedora-clad character in a live-action film for Netflix.
Since her breakout success withJane, Rodriguez has made it a point to pay it forward, as her production company I Can and I Will Productions has numerous projects in development around town that hail from female writers and storytellers of color. The newly-married actress is represented by CAA.

Mark Raso most recently directed theEd Harris-Jason SudeikisdramaKodachrome, which Netflix acquired out of the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. His first film,Copenhagen, won Slamdance in 2014. He’s repped by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.
