Sega Has Published an Official ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Timeline

Sega has also just canonized the timeline for theSonic the Hedgehoggames. Shared on theJapanese Sonic site, the official sequence of events spans “hundreds of thousands of years” and covers major events from the franchise’s 65-year-old history. The detailed chronology connects major plotlines across games, which includeSonic Adventures,Sonic Frontiers, andSonic CD,to bring the lore together.

In doing so,Sega has legitimized spin-offs likeSonic Shuffle, the 2000 party game that has been considered irrelevant to the timeline by longtime fans. The game follows Sonic as he attempts to save the mystical Maginaryworld and is often compared toMario Party. Not every game made the cut, though, sinceSonic Rivals, with characters like Silver and Eggman Nega, is absent from the lineup. However, that might be becausethe game was never officially released in Japan.
