A new trailer for theCoen Brothers’upcoming filmHail, Caesar!features a return to Hollywood’s Golden Age of filmmaking. The scene the Coens have chosen to focus on for the duration of this trip features starsRalph FiennesandAlden Ehrenreichengaged in a long bout of comedic wordplay. While I’ve found the earlier looks at the comedy incredibly endearing and engaging, this take does just the opposite, stretching a single gag to an irritating length without a clever enough punchline to bring it home. Your mileage may vary.
This new trailer aside, I love the premise ofHail, Caesar!Josh Brolinstars as Eddie Mannix, an old-timey Hollywood “fixer” who has a reputation for keeping actors' scandals out of the press. But when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) is kidnapped and held for ransom by a group calling themselves The Future, Mannix is tasked with collecting the $100,000 demand and rescuing the star. It’s a great setup that allows the Coens' particular brand of humor to play out while poking fun at big studio productions and filmmaking in general, and I’m looking forward to it as one of ourmost-anticipated films of 2016.
