The Pittwas one of the first new shows in 2025, and it didn’t take it long to become one of the most popular shows of the year, either. Fans everywhere were raving aboutThe Pittafter its first few episodes, and Max’s first original medical drama lived up to the high standards until the season concluded with an emotional finale. While it’sNoah Wyle’s Dr. Robby who leads Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, other doctors like Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) help give the show its real identity. In the short time we spend with Abbot, we learn that he’s not only a combat veteran who lost his leg, but there’s clearly more there. During a recent interview with Deadline, Hatosy spoke about the“hidden trauma”haunting Dr. Abbot:
“When you first meet Abbot,he’s clearly dealing with something, hidden trauma. And as it unfolds, we learn that he’s a combat veteran medic, but we don’t know that he’s standing there on one leg, but the reversal of that coming up at the end of the show, where Abbot has to then travel up those stairs to the roof, is very complex, but so well-drawn.”

Hatosy also spoke about the iconic roof scenes inThe Pitt, in which Dr. Abbot and Dr. Robby bond over some shared trauma. He mentions how Dr. Robby is“being pulled in so many different directions,”which has left him no time to“connect”with someone in the same boat as him:
“And again, there isn’t a ton of conversation that leads up to their understanding of each other, but it’s just because Robby has spent this 15-hour shift dealing with so many things — he’s leading, he’s teaching, he’s playing the father [figure], he’s playing the mentor to Langdon [Patrick Ball], and dealing with what that looks like, so he’s being pulled in so many directions — andhe hasn’t had a chance to connect with somebody who is, in many ways, on the same level.”

The entire first season ofThe Pitttakes place over one 15-hour shift. It’s clear throughout this shift, particularly after dealing with the mass shooting event, that Dr. Robby is breaking down. Hatosy spoke about how the two shared that moment on the roof at the end of the season allowed Dr. Robby to“let go”with someone who cares about him: “And it’s just such a damn relief once they get up there together, to have that moment to break down a little bit. He’s been keeping it all in for so long, and to be able tohave somebody that he can let go in front ofwas tremendous to me, seeing that.” Hatosy was also asked aboutThe PittSeason 2, but he admitted that he doesn’t know much. Fans remain hopeful that there will not only be more Abbot, but more of him interacting with the rest of the staff.
Is ‘The Pitt’ a Continuation of ‘ER’?
The Pittis not a continuation ofER, but instead an entirely new series starring Noah Wyle, who also featured in the lead role ofER. Wyle revealed during promotion forThe Pittthat, at one point, there was anERreboot in the works, but it ultimately fell through. Unfortunately, the creation ofThe Pittled toa lawsuit claiming that Max’s new medical drama is, essentially, a rip-offof what theERreboot was going to be. Wyle has expressedhis disappointment in the lawsuit.
