For those who had lost faith in the live-action remake following the disastrousSnow Whitein early 2025, Universal’sHow to Train Your Dragonremake has hopefully reinstilled your faith in what can be achieved with the popular modern movie phenomenon, with Collider’sMaggie Lovittcalling it “the gold-star example of how to do a live-action remake right,“in her 9/10 review.
Despite huge competition, which includes the arrival ofJames Gunn’sSuperman,How to Train Your Dragonis still making more impressive box office ground. In fact, in one of its biggest achievements to date,Dean DeBlois' remake has officially become one of the25 highest-grossing Universal movies in domestic box office history. It has done this with a current global haul of $561.6 million, split between a domestic total of $239.9 million and a further $321.7 million from overseas markets. Reportedly produced on a budget of $150 million, the film is already an enormous success, with its recent weekend haul of $7.9 million showing it still has plenty of life yet in its theatrical run.

Currently, in position #24 on the aforementioned list,How to Train Your Dragonhas now overtaken several other big titles in Universal’s stacked catalog, including the now 25th-placedFast & Furious 6,the fast-paced action sequel which introduced the franchise to the rather underwhelming villain Owen Shaw, played byLuke Evans. $3 million ahead ofHow to Train Your Dragonand next in line to be overtaken, at #23 on the list, is the 2003Jim Carrey-led comedyBruce Almighty, one of the iconic funny man’s highest-grossing projects ever.
‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Is Facing Some Universal-Sized Monster Box Office Competition
Alas,How to Train Your Dragon’s position on the list is under serious threat by theGareth Edwards-helmedJurassic World Rebirth, which has made over $230 million domestically in just 12 days. It’s likely the latest in the big-budget dino-franchise will overtake its current box office fire-breathing rival in the coming days, as the dragon prepares to fly nobly from our screens, just as the dinosaurs are settling in for a long and successful feast. However,Rebirthhas already lost toHow to Train Your Dragonwhen it comes to critical and audience reception, illustrated by the former’s mixed reception upon arrival, with Collider’sAidan Kelleysayingin his official review:
“There’s some fun to be had here, but overall,Jurassic World Rebirthfeels indicative that this franchise is not dissimilar from what the original film is trying to say about the ethics of cloning dinosaurs. Another one coming back might sound exciting or even revolutionary, but the hypothesis around the scenario never seems to account for the practicality.”
