It’s kind of scary to think how bad theIndependence Daysequel might turn out. The first one was such a phenomena that made the blockbuster movie genre more thrilling, but while the string ofpromotional materialhas been heavy on the special effects, I’ve been wondering if the writing is as promising. If this latest clip fromIndependence Day: Resurgenceis an indication, it isn’t.

The latest footage from the sequel from directorRoland EmmerichreturnsJeff Goldblumto his role of David Levinson, the MIT-educated satellite technician who was among those who dealt with the alien threat in the first film. Here, he’s placed oppositeCharlotte Gainsbourg(Nymphomaniac) as Dr. Catherine Marceaux, who’s trying to decipher a mysterious circular symbol that incites fear in those who’ve had alien encounters. As explained by some dude played byGame of ThronesactorDeobia Oparei, it’s likely an attempt to decipher a vision.

“They were hunting us” and the like aside, perhaps we should still be hopeful for higher quality elsewhere. Watch the clip below.

Independence Day: Resurgencealso starsBill Pullman,Vivica A. Fox,Maika Monroe,Joey King,Liam Hemsworth,William Fichtner,Jessie T. Usher,Sela Ward, andBrent Spiner. It’s been years since the first alien invasion, and the governments of the world have used recovered technology to enhance their defenses in case of another attack. The only problem is, they could never prepare for just how much more prepared the new wave of aliens are. It’s then left to a small group of men and women to prevent global extinction.

It was recently announced thatIndependence Daywill return to theaters as part ofa double featurewithResurgenceon Thursday, June  23rd. It’s a move that’ll likely bolster weekend box office sales, and yet watching the original and sequel back to back may serve to highlight the flaws in the latter. But, again, we’ll see.
