Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for the buzzworthy biopicJackie, which starsNatalie Portmanas First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. DirectedThe ClubandNofilmmakerPablo Larraín, the film chronicles the hours and days in the wake of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and Jackie struggles through her grief and works to solidify her husband’s legacy in a presidency cut short.

I was lucky enough to catchJackieat the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and this trailer is a perfect encapsulation of Larraín’s bold approach to the material. It’s captured in a very ethereal, introspective way rather going for the beat-by-beat formula of a traditional biopic. It sets itself apart by taking an almost uncomfortably intimate approach to Jackie Kennedy, from the story to the crowded, poetic visuals toMica Levi’s (Under the Skin) imposing original score.

The film is a terrific meditation on grief and legacy as we see Kennedy struggling to solidify her husband’s legacy while also coming to grips with his abrupt and violent death. Portman turns in what is quite possibly the best performance of her career, and while this trailer does a great job of selling the film, it knows that Portman owns this movie and it goes a long way towards selling the Academy on the potential Best Actress nominee.

Here’s the official synopsis forJackie:

JACKIE is a searing and intimate portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic First Lady, then Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (Natalie Portman). JACKIE places us in her world during the days immediately following her husband’s assassination. Known for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a psychological portrait of the First Lady as she struggles to maintain her husband’s legacy and the world of “Camelot” that they created and loved so well.
