Even for people who aren’t particularly big fans ofJoss Whedon’sBuffy the Vampire Slayerseries - I’m not - there’s something distinctly engaging and lovely about the musical episode. At the IFC center in New York City, midnight showings of the episode were once major weekend events, as popular with fanatical contingencies asThe Rocky Horror Picture Show. And once you see the episode, with all its rough-edged numbers and uproarious lyrics, you can understand completely why people show up for the screening of an episode of television. In fact, it nearly makes you understand why people like such a hit-and-miss show.
So, when a rumor started going around, starting onThat Hashtag ShowviaSR, that Whedon would be directing the musical crossover episodes ofSupergirlandThe Flash, the choice made total sense. On the latest episode, the hosts cite sources close to the production, which is about as vague as it gets when it comes to these sorts of announcements. You might as well say “some guy who knows a guy told me that Joss Whedon wants to direct the musical crossover episode.” Take this into consideration when you’re anticipation hits a peak for the forthcoming episode, set to be released in 2017.
Still, it’s exactly the kind of project that would allow Whedon to spread his wings, so to speak.The FlashandSupergirlare both openly melodramatic and cheesy when it comes to dialogue, likeBuffy the Vampire Slayer, and if the rumor that the Music Meister will be the villain in this episodes - the musical crossover will be a two-part event - the set-up wouldn’t be all that different from the musical episode ofBuffy. CW has yet to confirm any of this yet, but we’ll be on the lookout for any word. We could also just perk our ears up and wait for the sound of a thousand Whedonites screaming in joy in unison.
