One of the many films that world premiered at this year’s SXSW was directorJohn Lee Hancock’sThe Highwaymen. The film follows the “untold true story” of the former Texas Rangers (played byKevin CostnerandWoody Harrelson) who captured and killed the notorious outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. The detectives were notable because they relied on their instincts and old school skills rather than the latest technology employed by the FBI. The film also starsKim Dickensas Costner’s wife andKathy Batesplays “Ma” Ferguson – who was the first female Governor of Texas.

Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with Kim Dickens for a wide-ranging interview. She talked about being part of HBO’sTremeand how the network let the show run its course even though it didn’t have huge ratings, howThe Highwaymenis like an old-school Hollywood movie, what it was like working with Kevin Costner, the experience of shooting in Louisiana, what she took away from working withDavid FincheronGone Girl, and something I cannot wait to see: theDeadwoodmovie!

Check out what she had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about.

Finally, I’d also like to take a moment to give special thanks to our Collider Studio partner, A-List Communications. At the Supper Suite venue in Austin, libations were flowing courtesy of El Tesoro Tequila, Blue Moon Belgian White, and Hint Water. Without these fine folks, we wouldn’t be able to share conversations about movies like The Highwaymen with all of you, so another big thank you to our partners for their support.

Kim Dickens:

Here’s the official synopsis forThe Highwaymen:

The outlaws made headlines. The lawmen made history. From director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side),The Highwaymenfollows the untold true story of the legendary detectives who brought down Bonnie and Clyde. When the full force of the FBI and the latest forensic technology aren’t enough to capture the nation’s most notorious criminals, two former Texas Rangers (Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson) must rely on their gut instincts and old school skills to get the job done.
