Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the upcoming blockbusterKong: Skull Island. Directed byJordan Vogt-Roberts(The Kings of Summer), the film re-envisions the iconic King Kong in a story that takes place in the midst of the Vietnam War, with a diverse team of explorers venturing deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific, only to come across the beast himself.
This trailer delves much more into the story ofKong: Skull Islandthan the previous one that debuted at Comic-Con this summer, and it appears that this is far from aKing Kongremake. Indeed, there are more antagonistic beasts on the island besides the giant ape, as we get a look at the “skull-walkers” that appear to be the main “bad guys” that our heroes (including Kong) will be fighting. It makes sense, as Warner Bros. and Legendary are building towards aKong vs. Godzillamoviethat will build off ofSkull Islandand the foundationGareth Edwardsset withGodzilla, and one imagines there will be a mighty big Monarch connection to whatever other creatures are found on Skull Island.

The tone of the film also looks to be quite different than I expected. Vogt-Roberts juggled a number of tones in his debut featureKings of Summer, which he said was influenced byMichael Bay’s overblownBad Boys II—a film that blended a variety of tenors and genres into one movie. That could certainly be the case here, as Vogt-Roberts looks to have crafted a gorgeously colorful and stylish blockbuster with elements of humor, horror, and even war drama. So yeah, I’m intrigued.
