It’s just about July, and that means we’ve got our list of what will be premiering on Netflix in July, and it’s actually a not-so-bad line-up. As I said in my piece about what will be leaving the streaming service in the coming weeks, there’s a lot more substantial stuff getting cut than there is being added, but that shouldn’t diminish the big titles that will be hitting the Netflix server as July rolls out.
Most notable on this list is theBack to the Futuretrilogy, the best cure to a hangover, taken with water, that has ever existed. This, along with the additions of theLethal Weaponmovies and the first twoBeverly Hills Copfilms, would seemingly plug the hole left by the excising of sevenStar Trekmovies, but there’s not much to substitute for losing actual masterpieces likeA Clockwork Orange,2001: A Space Odyssey, andThe Quiet Man. The closest you got here isGentlemen Prefer Blondes,Howard Hawks' brilliant comedy that makes premium use out ofMarilyn Monroe’s dazzling comic talents;Butch Cassidy & The Sundance KidandThe Sting,though enjoyable, are both not-so-great in the sobering light of day.
Still, July looks to bring a number of strong, if minor works, ranging fromMean GirlsandBeavis and Butt-head Do AmericatoMustangandBig Trouble in Little China. And that’s not evening mentioning that the month will bring with it the return of Netflix’s most astonishing original series to date, the resonant, wildly unpredictableBoJack HorsemanSeason 3.So, in this especial case, I’m actually rooting for the original programming even harder than the film library.
