Ladies and gentleman, sitcom dreams do come true. The folks over at FOX looked at the whacky ensembles on their comedy hitsNew GirlandBrooklyn Nine-Nineand thought, those people should be in the same room. Well, they’re right and this is all but guaranteed to be an absolutely delightful hour of television.
The romantically intertwined, Manhattan loft-dwellingNew Girlcrew will team up withBrooklyn Nine-Nine’s offbeat, also somewhat romantically intertwined Brooklyn PD for a one-hour crossover event on Tuesday, October 11. First withBrooklyn Nine-Nine’s episode at 8:00 pm and concluding withNew Girlat 8:30.
Presumably, this will all come about thanks to Winston’s burgeoning career in the NYPD, and I just can’t wait to watchAndre Braugher’s no-nonsense Captain Holt size up New Girl’s increasingly bizarre series breakout. MaybeAndy Samberg’s Jake Peralta andZooey Deschanel’s Jessica Day can have a quirk off. Obviously, the ultimate wish list is that the whole gang will somehow end up in a rousing game of True American, because that’s an opportunity that’s too good to be missed.
Elizabeth Meriwether, creator and executive producer of New Girl is treating this news with all the enthusiasm and seriousness it deserves,
“The crossover episode has historically been the artistic high point of any show that has dared to attempt it,” she said. “Maybe you remember ‘Blackout Thursday’ on NBC, or even further back the infamous ‘Alf’/‘Gilligan’s Island’ crossover of the late 1980s. NEW GIRL and BROOKLYN NINE-NINE will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s. We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone. There’s a 50% chance Alf will also be in both episodes. But there’s also a 50% chance that is a lie.”
Aside from a few recent oddballs (theBones/Sleepy Hollowevent stands out), crossovers have largely been dominated by the superhero genre since Marvel dropped the old “shared universe” bomb. But, as Meriwether recalled, the tradition of sitcom crossovers is long and proud (ish), and it’s a huge opportunity for some good, old-fashioned fun.
