Horror anthologies are almost always something of a mixed bag. It’s a genre tradition, and a proud one, which allows filmmakers to fly a little more free without the burden of big-budget pressures and the challenge to carry an entire film. It lets them get weird with it, try something a different, or finally get around to that one not-quite-feature-length story that’s been nagging at their brain all these years. But because a single filmmaker isn’t carrying the film, it’s even harder to get the tone and structure just right — something very few anthologies, even the good ones, accomplish....

Early on inReturn to Soul, the excellent film fromDavy Chou, we see Freddie (Ji-min Park, in one of the year’s best performances) going out for drinks with some friends in South Korea. This is the first time she’s been back to Korea since she was adopted by her French parents, and she doesn’t seem to have a reason for her return visit, and she doesn’t even speak the language. She doesn’t know the customs, as she shows early on as she pours her own drink—apparently a no-no—and unites the several scattered groups into one larger one for a night of drinking....

The early box office tracking forRogue One: A Star Wars Storyis in, and it is very good news for Lucasfilm. Before we get too deep, however, it’s important to note that tracking is A. Incredibly imprecise, B. Just a starting point, and C. Incredibly imprecise. Sony Pictures Animation’sSmurfsfranchise is going with all-computer-generated animation in the new movieSmurfs: The Lost Village. Directed byKelly Asbury(Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,Shrek 2,Gnomeo and Juliet), the newestSmurfsmovie was previously teased in thefilm’s first trailer, but today a new trailer takes the tale of the pint-sized title heroes even further. There are a few nods to the classic Smurfs mythology throughout this trailer–the familiar characters, the fact that every Smurf is a dude except for Smurfette, and even a cute little joke about Smurfs being “three apples tall”–but it looks like this new film wants to widen the miniature world even further....

With the highly-anticipated premiere ofStar Trek: Strange New Worldsright around the corner, Paramount+ has released some absolutely stunning new images of Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Number One/Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), and Spock (Ethan Peck), as well as the rest of the crew of Pike’s Enterprise. After taking a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, The CW’sThe Flashreturned this week with the first part of a two-night crossover event with sister seriesArrow. Not only does this two-episode event allow more time for a story big enough to encompass two teams of superheroes battling new villains across two cities, it also sets up The CW’s spin-off seriesLegends of Tomorrow.
