Alan Menken, a true living legend and the composer behind (amongst other things)Little Shop of Horrors,The Little MermaidandAladdin, has now reached the legendary EGOT status with a Daytime Emmy win for his typically exemplary work onTangled: The Series(for a song called “Waiting in the Wings”). He is one of only 16 artists who have achieved this threshold, having now won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Bow down to the King....

We have some sad news to report today. Oscar-nominated directorJohn Singletonhas passed away at the age of 51. Singleton had suffered a stroke and was on life support, and his family made the decision to take him off that life support. Singleton is a fascinating director and one of the most important in bringing black cinematic voices to the mainstream. The influence of his breakthrough 1991 debutBoyz in the Hoodcan’t be understated, but Singleton never ran from telling stories with race at the forefront includingPoetic Justice,Higher Learning,Rosewood, the remake ofShaft, andBaby Boy....

I wondered why Warner Bros. didn’t releaseDoctor Sleepbefore Halloween. It seemed pretty obvious to release a sequel to one of the greatest horror films of all-time at a time when people are craving horror movies. But after seeingDoctor Sleep, the decision makes sense becauseMike Flanagan’s adaptation ofStephen King’s novel isn’t really a horror movie. It has some horror elements, but it plays more like harder-edged superhero story where people with special abilities are duking it out to protect or conquer other people with special abilities....

We’ve seen a resurgence in the miniseries, and a love affair with “limited series,” but up until now those distinctions have been in reference to dramas. Leave it to theDuplass Brothers(MarkandJay) to mix things up by bringing a comedy anthology to HBO calledRoom 104. The brothers’ last series on HBO,Togetherness, was cancelled after its second season (and actually would have made for a decent anthology series idea as well, since Season 2 got a little too stuck in a repetitive and depressive mire)....

The entirety of the action film followsChris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake reluctantly escorting and protecting a young boy named Ovi (Rudraksh Jaiswal) in the streets of Dhaka, and from the beginning of the movie it’s clear that Tyler doesn’t really care if he lives or dies. But along the way, he develops a relationship with the young boy and comes to terms with his own son’s death, to the point that when he’s fighting to get Ovi across the bridge at the end of the movie, he’s not being careless....

Kenan Thompsonis already the longest-serving cast member inSaturday Night Live’s fifty-year history, and he doesn’t plan on leaving any time soon. Thompson fully intends to be the show’s first “forever cast member.” The comedian discussed his future plans this week withEntertainment Weekly.
