There was quite a lot to love about last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. For me, the surprise orchestra concert playing theStar Warsscore(s) after theStar Wars: The Force Awakenspanel was a major treat, but just as awesome was seeing (and shaking hands with)Steven Moffatat theSherlockpanel or simply finding a solid 30 minutes to roam the main floor and look over the goods & wares available. I was working (read: standing in lines) for much of the time, but these small joys made most of the work more than worth it....

For children of the 80s and 90s, these short stories written byAlvin Schwartzand horrifyingly illustrated byStephen Gammelllived up to their title:Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. You may have had yourGoosebumpscollection and you may have hidden beneath your blanket for Snick’s airings ofAre You Afraid of the Dark?, but everyone remembers the scrawly illustrations that accompanied these skin-crawling stories.R.L. Stine’s series already has two big-screen adaptations and the Nickelodeon nightmare-machine has one on the way, but this will be the first time thatScary Storiesgets an adaptation of any kind, save for a documentary....

André Øvredal’s adaptation ofScary Stories to Tell in the Darkis a horror movie that loves horror movies. It does this not by dropping in loads of references (although it does front-load a bit by showing its protagonist’s love of the genre), but simply by showing the power of good horror stories that are well told. Øvredal skillfully walks the line between scarring and spooking his audience, giving them the tension and disturbing imagery that a PG-13 rating will allow while also providing the giddy thrills we enjoy from scary movies....

At long last,Ron Howard’sSolo: A Star Wars Storyis starting to come together, as revealed by the recently releasednew trailerandhi-res imagesthat accompanied it. And it arrived just in the nick of time since all we’ve had since the previously releasedteaser trailerwas thisDenny’s tie-in commercial… Oh and the Disney/Lucasfilm anthology story is slated to premiere at Cannes on May 15th before its wide release on May 25th, so it’s probably a safe bet that we’ll start seeing more from Han Solo’s story in the run-up....

Despite the big-budget failure of Sutter’sSOAfollow-up for the network inThe Bastard Executioner, FX is backing the expansion of the showrunner’s motorcycle gang world. BeforeThe AmericansandFargoandAmerican Crime Story,Sons of Anarchywas FX’s flagship drama, and for a few seasons it definitely deserved that distinction. It remained one of the network’s most-watched series throughout its seven year run, and FX is surely hoping for more of the same fromMayans MC....
