Netflixhas had a lot of success in the last few years with the action genre. The streamer’s next venture into the genre is withSilverton Siegewhich releases on April 27. To promote the upcoming release, Netflix has dropped a new trailer for the film showcasing what fans of the genre can expect from this action thriller.
The plot for the film is “inspired by true life events that took place in South Africa in 1980. A trio of freedom fighters get into a collision course with the state after a failed sabotage mission, which turns into a bank hostage stand off.” The trailer teases exactly that with the new footage starting off with shots of police cars speeding down the road, a cop shooting out a car tire, and our freedom fighters running away from something. This is all cut together with the voice-over of one of the freedom fighters Calvin played byThabo Rametsi. Calvin tells the audience his tragic backstory of watching his parents get gunned down by police when he was a little boy and his mission is to avenge them.

This then takes us to the main part of the trailer where Calvin and his other two freedom fighters enter the bank. One of the fighters proclaims “this is bad” before they proceed with their plan. They then take the bank hostage and the police then surround the building. One of the hostages says there is only one way the trio is getting out of this, “prison or death.” Calvin reassures them that this is not a bank robbery and, if they all stay calm, they can go home. The usual tension that arises from a situation like this occurs when another hostage says, “You’re all the same. Nothing but criminals.” This is when the tables turn as Calvin suggests that,“ if our lives are worth nothing, then maybe we negotiate for a life that is worth everything.” They demand for the release of Nelson Mandela and the police have one hour to get it done.

One of the hostages tells the trio what they are doing is impossible and Calvin quotes Mandela directly saying, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Tension rises again as the final part of the trailer is a montage of different escalation shots that highlight the themes of the film. Calvin’s voiceover accompanies the sweat-inducing imagery saying,“ you may hide behind your history, use your privilege and your money, but you can’t run away from who you really are.” The last handful of shots presents tense standoffs, explosions, and a frantic chase sequence. The trailer leaves its audience with one final question. What is the price of freedom? The answer is “everything.”
Silverton Siegelooks to be a well-shot thriller that’s action is just as sharp as its political commentary. The film’s historical backdrop and relevance only adds to this story’s intrigue. As mentioned before, Netflix has had a lot of success with action thrillers likeExtraction. This film looks to continue that trend and, withMandlakayise Walter Dubebehind the camera as director, this is the next Netflix film to look out for. Dube spent years as a camera assistant on other action films likeThe Italian JobandMen in Black 2, so the director has a lot of experience with this genre.
