Having recently debuted on digital following an unusually long theatrical window,Sinnersretained a spot on the top 10 list at the domestic box office this weekend. The vampire movie has proven what an extended theatrical run can do for movies designed for the big screen, especially at a time when more and more studios are pushing titles onto PVOD mere days after their theatrical debuts. In recent times, Universal has earned flak for releasing underperformers such asThe Fall GuyandBlack Bagon digital earlier than expected. Largely speaking, however, movies that display box office potential are spared this fate.

Sinnersbought time for itself thanks to a record-breaking opening weekend haul. Produced ona reported budget of $90 million, the movie has made an astonishing $270 million-plus from domestic theaters, and another $84 million from overseas markets. Despite the lower performance internationally, thefilm’s cumulative global haul stands at $357 million.Sinnershas now overtaken the lifetime global hauls ofBaz Luhrmann’sThe Great Gatsby($353 million),Tim Burton’sDumboremake ($352 million), andDarren Aronofsky’s $160 million Biblical epicNoah, which made $350 million worldwide over a decade ago.

Directed byRyan Coogler,Sinnersmarks his first original project since his debut feature,Fruitvale Station. It unites him with that film’s star,Michael B. Jordan, who also worked with Coogler on the firstCreedand the firstBlack Pantherfilms. Thanks to the movie’s excellent performance, Coogler has established himself asone of the highest-grossing filmmakers in global box office history, despite having just five films under his belt. He’s a unique talent, and this is probably why W.B. agreed to his rather unique terms. In addition to givingSinnersa massive theatrical roll-out and allowing Coogler to film on IMAX 70 mm film, thestudio agreed to surrender the film’s rights to him after 25 years.
