If you’re one of the cultured few with a penchant for both classic fairy tales and high-tops, you’re in luck. Disney has announced a new original title coming to their streaming platform Disney+ on August 04, 2025:Sneakerella, whicha tweetby the streamer describes as “the classic fairy tale with new heart and sole.” The news was revealed as part of Disney+ Day, which celebrates the second anniversary of the streamer and promises to unveil announcements from every Disney property, including Marvel,Star Wars, Pixar, NatGeo, and more.

The film, a musical comedy directed byElizabeth Allen Rosenbaumand written byDavid Light & Joseph Raso, Tamara Chestna,Mindy Stern, andGeorge Gore II(best known for playing Junior in the AMC sitcomMy Wife and Kids), looks to be a gender-swapped reimagining of the Cinderella story, which came to major prominence in 1950 with Disney’s own animated adaptation. This one transplants the fantastical narrative from the regal backdrop of French aristocracy to New York City in the present, with the glass slippers seemingly swapped out for a killer pair of kicks.

Chosen Jacobs, who can be seen sweeping up a sneaker store at the beginning of the trailer, steps in as El (geddit: Cinder-El-la), the beleaguered, downtrodden orphan at the center of the tale. After falling in love with Kira King (Lexi Underwood) the daughter of basketball star and sneaker tycoon Darius King, he gains the confidence to pursue his dream of becoming a professional sneaker designer. But of course he has the help of his best friend, Sami - a stand-in for Gus the mouse, perhaps? - and, duh, his Fairy Godmother.
