Three years afterStar Trek Into Darknesshit theaters,Star Trek Beyondhas finally arrived, withJustin LinreplacingJ.J. Abramsbehind the camera. For those who watched Lin’s work onTrue DetectiveSeason 2 probably are not exactly jumping for the chance to see what he’s got next but it must be said that Lin shows some real chops inStar Trek Beyond, which is easily his best film since his debut,Better Luck Tomorrow.
The film brings backChris Pineas Captain James Tiberius Kirk, the leader of the crew of the Enterprise, one of the main ships used by Star Fleet in their exploration of the vast unknowns of space. He’s again backed-up by Spock (Zachary Quinto), Bones (Karl Urban), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekhov, played by the lateAnton Yelchinin one of his last performances. This time, rather than facing off with one of the franchise’s most well known villains in Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch), they face off with a vicious, violent alien leader named Krall (Idris Elba, in a lot of make-up), whose wanting to destroy the Enterprise has yet to be explained, thankfully.
The reviews for the film have been positive thus far, with our own Matt Goldbergsayingthat the film gives the rebooted franchise its first dose of real personality rather than retreading what the past films and tv series have done.
