OK, yes, technicallyNever Have I Everdebuted in April, but the wildfire word of mouth didn’t really spark until May kicked off. And just to be safe, we want to make sure you don’t miss this delightful new coming-of-age comedy series. Co-created byMindy Kalingand Lang Fisher, the half-hour comedy centers on Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a fifteen-year-old high school student struggling to cope with the tragic death of her father, her burgeoning sexuality, and learning to be a good friend. That sounds like a lot of familiar coming-of-age stories, butNever Have I Everpresents it all through a unique and hilarious lens, integrating Devi’s family and culture without commodifying it and making you fall for a cast of characters who instantly feel like family. Devi herself is a compelling and powerful lead, but she’s surrounded by an ensemble of scene-stealers, from her powerful mother to her nerdy BFFs, and of course, the internet’s newly crowned boyfriend Paxton Hall-Yoshida. It’s a perfect binge-watch, equal parts joyful and soulful, embracing candor in its approach to trauma but wrapping up hope and good humor along with it.

The latest binge-worthy product to emerge fromRyan Murphy’s Netflix deal,Hollywoodreimagines the Golden Age as a more diverse and inclusive era. The rare alt-history that opts to veer optimistic (seeMan in the High CastleorThe Plot Against Americafor the more common alternative),Hollywoodoffers a revisionist fantasy of what might have been, had Hollywood’s Golden Era dared to be a bit more inclusive. Murphy’s newest show has proved divisive in its first days since it was released, with some celebrating it as a powerfully optimistic piece of wish-fulfillment and some have understandably called into question the way Murphy’sfairytale undermines the real people behind Hollywood’s hard-won real-world progress. Wherever you fall on it,Hollywoodoffers up a decadent, bingeable drama with all the Murphy hallmarks; salacious drama, glamp fashion, and a knockout ensemble.

Into the Night

Need a new sci-fi thriller to keep the blood pumping?Into the Night(not to be confused with‌ Hulu’s horror anthologyInto the Darkor The CW’s blind detective dramaIn the Dark) charts a course towards darkness in an apocalyptic drama where the sun suddenly becomes a scorching death sentence for everything it touches. The first original Belgian Netflix series,Into the Nightwastes no time, picking up at the airport check-in counter, where we meet our main characters and follow them onto what should be a quick flight to Russia. But when an armed man bursts into the flight before takeoff and demands that they fly west, the passengers quickly realize they’re in a race against the sun itself, with only the plane, their wits, and their fellow passengers to get them through. Speaking of which, if you’ve ever flown, you know your fellow passengers can be a mixed bag, to put it politely, so imagine getting caught with them in the apocalypse. It’s thrilling, pulpy, compulsive watching and with just six 40-minute-or-less episodes, it’s a heck of an international jaunt through a high-concept end of the world.
