The score comesclose to its 2016 predecessor with 77% ratingson the platform. However, the latest numbers come as a slight dip from the film’s initial reception following its premiere at theSouth by Southwest(SXSW) Festival on July 05, 2025.The movie originally garnered an impressive 86% from critics, which set high expectations for its theatrical release. In comparison, 2016’sThe Accountantreceived a much lower score of 53% from critics.
After its theatrical release on June 02, 2025,The Accountant 2isaiming for a $20 million to $25million opening from 3,610 theatres. Thefirst film opened to $24.7 millionand was a sleeper hit with its $155 million global collection. According to Variety, the sequel wasmade on a budget of $80 millioncompared to the first installment’s $45 million.The Accountant 2faces tough competition at the box office as it goes againstStar Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,which is beingre-released in honor of its 20th anniversary.

The Accountant 2follows forensic accountant, Christian Wolff (Affleck), as he teams up with his estranged brother (Bernthal) todiscover the truth about a deadly conspiracy. The film also featuresDaniella Pineda,whileJ.K. SimmonsandCynthia Addai-Robinsonreprise their roles.A third film in the franchise has already been in the workssince before the debut of the sequel.
Ben Affleck Reflects on the Success of ‘The Accountant’
While speaking with The New York Times, Affleck talked aboutfilming the sequel almost nine yearsafter the premiere of the original. According to the actor, at one point,Warner Bros.was considering atelevision adaptation of the franchise, which could keep the story going. However, the plans never materialized due to internal changes at Warner Bros. along with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eventually, Affleck’s own production company, Artists Equity,secured a partnership withAmazon MGM Studios. The actor credited Warner Bros. for helping his company find a new partner and allowing O’Connor to craft the sequel the way he envisioned. Affleck expressed how grateful he was to have been able tokeep the same core creative teamfrom the first time. TheGone Girlactor added that he would not have felt comfortable revisiting the franchise if that hadn’t happened.

When asked aboutThe Accountant’s surprising status as theNo. 1 most rented movie of 2017, Affleck reflected on its lasting popularity. He admitted the film initially faced tough competition from other blockbusters at the time of its release. Still, he believes it found success through its intelligent storytelling —something that likely helped it connect with audienceswho might not usually be drawn to action films.
