Now, over two years on from its UK debut and just under two years since itsSeason 1 US premiere on Paramount+,The Goldis ready to return to the BBCthis June with plenty more story to tell.

Starring the likes ofHugh Bonnevilleas Brian Boyce,Dominic Cooperas Edwyn Cooper,Charlotte Spenceras Nicki Jennings,Emun Elliottas Tony Brightwell,Tom Cullenas John Palmer,Stefanie Martinias Marnie Palmer,Sam Spruellas Charlie Miller, and more, the first season, contrary to popular belief, only explored half of this wild true tale, with creator Neil Forsyth always planning to turn this into two seasons of television according to stars Spencer and Elliott. Speaking toThe Radio Times, the pair teased the upcoming season and expanded on why the series had to end after two outings.

“I think people don’t realise that, even when I’ve spoken to friends and family who are like, ‘Oh my god, it’s got a second season?’, and it’s like,‘Yeah, because they only ever found half [of the gold]'.So there’s, like, a whole other storyline that people don’t know about which I think they’re gonna like,” said Spencer, with Elliott adding:

“The way Neil writes often, because I’ve worked with him a couple of times, he always seems to know whether something’s going to be a standalone thing, a two parter, a three parter.So he has that kind of entire story arc in his head from episode 1, season 1. And obviously if the first season had been a disaster, there would be no season 2, but luckily, there was such a great response, that we got to continue chasing this gold.”

What Is ‘The Gold’ Season 2 About?

Receiving an impressive92% critical score on review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes, as well as an 87% audience rating,The Gold’s second season certainly has a high bar to live up to. With the first half of this true story leaving jaws dropped and viewers on the edge of their seats, Season 2 seems to have just as many twists and turns in its back pocket. “Season 2 explores what happened to the other half, and the criminal fortune it created. As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organized crime,” the synopsis for the second season teases. “The police embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police.”
