According to FlixPatrol, the mystery drama defeated reigning championSirensfrom the top spot on June 5, earning 707 points in total. Since its debut last week,Dept. Qhas earned a total of nearly 3,000 points.Sirens, on the other hand, has earned a total of more than 10,000 points since its debut. Co-created byThe Queen’s Gambit’sScott Frank,Dept. QstarsMatthew Goodeas a Scottish detective who specializes in cold cases. The series holds a “certified fresh” 83%Rotten Tomatoes score, and an even better 94% audience rating.

Sirens, on the other hand, starsJulianne Moore,Meghann FahyandMilly Alcockin the lead roles, and unfolds across a hectic weekend on a billionaire’s private island. Moore plays Michaela Kell, the wife of the said billionaire, who’s putting together a fund-raiser for her bird sanctuary. But her plans are disrupted by the arrival of Fahy’s character, Devon, who immediately accuses her of having indoctrinated her sister, Simone, into a cult, and of having murdered her husband’s first wife.

Sirensholds a “certified fresh” 76% scoreon the aggregator website, whose consensus reads, “Sirenssings a tune tried and true thanks to laudable performances by Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, and Milly Alcock.“In her review, Collider’sTherese Lacsonwrote, “Sirenstosses a lot at the wall, and almost all of it sticks, but the wall itself is just too small… Five episodes are not nearly enough time to fully tell the story that these characters deserve.”

Netflix Has Delivered a String of Hit Mysteries this Year

The show’s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is currently at 62%, which doesn’t exactly indicate widespread approval. It is, however, designed to be divisive, what with its genre-fluid narrative and frequent subversion of tropes. Netflix has already had one breakout hit this year, the British seriesAdolescence, which continues to hold a 99%Rotten Tomatoes score, having delivered one of the biggest viewership figures in the streamer’s history.
