Back when the firstJack Reachermovie was first announced, I was in the crowd of skeptics who thought that castingTom Cruiseas the 6 ft. 5 in. former Major in the United States Army Military Police Corps from authorLee Child’s books was a misstep. Then I saw the film. Cruise’s energy and sheer force of will brought the character to life in a way that only movie magic could make believable. You have only to look at the scene of the street fight in which Cruise’s Reacher takes on multiple opponents with ease to say: That’s Jack Reacher.
But like many film franchises that came before it,Jack Reacheris in danger of contracting sequelitis withJack Reacher: Never Go Back. A new trailer, one specifically cut for the film’s upcoming IMAX release, skips past the grounded and tough-but-vulnerable crafting of the character the first film established and turns Cruise’s portrayal into a machine-like, unstoppable force. Perhaps it’s just the marketing-material nature of the trailer that seeks to showcase the most badass moments from the film, but part of what madeJack Reacherso enjoyable was the feeling that he could die at any moment, but probably wouldn’t. I don’t get the same feeling from this new trailer, but Cruise remains a badass just the same.

Also starringCobie Smulders,Aldis Hodge,Holt McCallany, andRobert Knepper,Jack Reacher: Never Go Backopens October 21st.
