Hanks stars alongsideStephen GrahamandElisabeth Shue(The Boys) inGreyhound, the 2020 WWII epic following an inexperienced Navy commander who is tasked with leading his convoy against a dangerous German submarine wolf pack.Greyhoundis streaming exclusively on Apple TV+, and the film is still in the top 10 in more than 50 countries around the world, including the United States. The film debuted with a strong “Certified Fresh” 78% from critics onRotten Tomatoesand a 76% on that audience-driven Popcornmeter, and it did not report any box office earnings.

Greyhoundwas released straight to streaming on Apple TV+ in 2020, a model that Hanks has expressed his discontent with openly. During an interview with the Guardian,Hanks admitted that he was “heartbroken”that Apple decided not to giveGreyhounda theatrical release, citing that sound quality and the overall experience just aren’t the same at home. He later lightened this stance slightly, thanking his “Apple overlords” for saving the movie, which would have sunk in the middle of the Pacific had it not been acquired by the tech giant. In addition to starring in the film, Hanks also wrote the script forGreyhound, which is based onThe Good ShepherdbyC.S. Forester.Aaron Schneiderdirected the film, which came 11 years after he directedBill MurrayinGet Low.

Tom Hanks ‘Forrest Gump’ Reunion Didn’t Go As Planned

Last year brought on the release ofHere, the coming-of-age generational story following families as they deal with loss, life, and love. The story is told from the same perspective with a still camera, an untraditional model rarely used in modern filmmaking. The film marked a reunion for Hanks,Robin Wright, andRobert Zemeckis, who all previously worked together onForrest Gump. Unfortunately, it bombed at the box office, earning only $15 million against a $45 million budget. It did, however, find success streaming onNetflixupon its premiere, and it’s still streaming on the platform.
