If there’s one thing for sure, it’s that the next few years are going to be the home of multiple franchises. We’ve gathered a list of the most exciting sequels that are set to be made over the next few years—including a few that are mainly ideas, but we hope are in the pipeline. Will your favorite movie be getting another installment this year?
The Accountant 2 - Speculation
WhenThe Accountantwas released in 2016,Ben Affleckand the rest of the cast received positive reviews and huge monetary success. The film brought in $155.1 million globally, while it was created on a $44 million budget.
With the hype of the first film, there was immediate gossip of a second film in the works. There has been talk amongst audiences claiming that they would love to see the character from the original movie brought back for another, and it seems Affleck is willing to reprise the role once more.

DirectorGavin O’ Connorspoke on a potential sequel back in 2016 withCinema Blendsaying, “In the second one, if we’re ever fortunate to do it, I keep having this idea of aCatcher in the Ryekind of thing. He’s surrounded by children, dealing with slavery and… things like that…If there’s a way to deal with that subject matter and him saving children, that’s something I’d really be interested in doing.”
Sounds pretty dark.
Coming To America 2 - In Production
WhenEddie Murphyhinted at a possible sequel on Twitter, social media fans went into an uproar. Almost immediately after, Murphy deleted the tweet. However, as we all know, nothing is ever really deleted off the internet, and there is still proof of Murphy’s words floating in the cyber atmosphere.
A few months after, (once everyone had simmered down),50/50directorJonathon Levineconfirmed that there was indeed a sequel in the works. The writers for the sequel toldABCthat the storyline would follow Eddie Murphy’s character as he searches for his American son.

Murphy has remained quiet on the subject since sparking the social media storm.
The Rocketeer - In Production
90’s kids, where you at?!
There’s a good chance you rememberThe Rocketeerif you were around whenRobin Hood: Prince of ThievesandTerminator 2: Judgment Daywere released.
Unfortunately, these big box office hits overshadowedThe Rocketeer, which was considered to be a disappointment at the box office, grossing only $46 million on a $35 million budget.

Disney, (the king of resurrecting dead films) is looking to bring the cult franchise back to life two decades later.
The revived concept centers on an African American woman attempting to take the rocketeer jetpack during the Cold War. This will then spark a cat and mouse chase between her and a mad scientist, who is trying to use the technology for an evil scheme.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 - Speculation
The first film that starredTom Cruisesaw his character—William Cage—thrown into a time loop during a vicious (and probably painful) fight with invincible aliens who want to destroy the earth. With each day he has to relive the battle, his combat skills improve, and he finds himself getting better with each round. Don’t remember it? That’s ok.
Although critics sang high praises for the film, it wasn’t really a hit when it was first released in 2014. You’ve probably seen it recently on your favorite streaming service, where it has since gained popularity five years after it appeared in theaters.

Some rumors began forming two years after its release that there was a sequel in the process, but we haven’t heard anything since.
47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter - In Production
Look, some people just can’t get enough of the shark horror genre, ok? There, I said it.
In 2017,47 Meters Downwas created with a budget of $5 million and wound up with a gross of $44 million domestically. With that kind of return, it’s pretty apparent that there’s a sequel in the queue.
When two sisters are invited by strangers to watch sharks from a diving cage, they are hesitant, but they go.
The sisters then lie and tell them they are experienced divers (because how could that go wrong) and get into a rusty diving cage and head down. The chain breaks, leaving them (you guessed it) 47 meters below surrounded by sharks.
The Next Chapter’s director promises audiences that the sequel of the film will give a fresh take on this genre, comparing it toThe Descent, but underwater.
Men in Black International - Being Released Soon
Let’s get this out of the way first. No, unfortunately,Will Smithwill not be returning for the fourth film in the franchise. Also, before you ask, neither willTommy Lee Jones. The new movie will be introducing a whole new cast includingLiam Neeson,Chris Hemsworth, andTessa Thompson.
The film, released by Sony Pictures on July 11, 2025, is said to be the reboot of the year. With the filming taking place in New York, Morocco, Italy, and London, we look forward to seeing the suit-wearing alien fighters on the big screen again in this new twist on the story.
Bill and Ted Face The Music - Being Released Soon
Yes, our heroes will return once more for the third installment of the Bill and Ted saga. With the film set to begin production in 2019, we are likely to see the film make its way onto the big screen by August 23, 2025.
Bill and Ted must now go on another adventure prompted by a visit from a future caller. The future visitor warns the pair that only their song can bring harmony to the universe. The plot thickens as the friends now go into overdrive to finish the Wyld Stallyns song that is prophesied to save the world.
Top Gun: Maverick - Being Released Soon
Although teasers were hinting a sequel to the beloved 80s film would take place June 16, 2025, it has been pushed back to June 09, 2025. The reason for the push back was because filmmakers are hoping to ‘wow’ audiences with intense flight scenes and sequences.
In the sequel,Val Kilmerwill make a return as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongsideJon Hamm,Ed Harris,Lewis Pullman,Charles Parnell,Jay Ellis,Bashir Salahuddin,Danny Ramirez,Monica Barbaro, and, of course,Tom Cruise.
On July 05, 2025, filming was confirmed when Cruise posted a photo on Twitter featuring Ray-Bans and his original Maverick helmet with the words “Feel the Need” across the middle.
There’s only one question we have: Is there ANY way we can bring back Goose?!
We’re Wolves - Speculation
With a TV show on FX as of March,What We Do In The Shadowsis getting a lot of love from the media right now. Recently, there has been talk of a sequel in the works which would center on werewolves instead of vampires.
Taika WaititiandJemaine Clementhave been wanting to do a sequel for years, with Waititi tellingBloody-Disgusting.com“we always had plans to make another movie, but other things, Thor, got in the way of our plans to make a werewolf movie and we keep talking about it.” In 2017, Taika Waititi received high praise for his role in directingThor: Ragnarok.
