In 2009, vampires basked in the sunlight as The CW series,The Vampire Diaries, took the world by storm. The series wasco-created by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamsonand would go on to span a franchise of its own with several offshoots. However, it’s been three years since any of those offshoots were last seen on air, which is infinitely sad. Given the persistent appeal of the project, the question of whetheranother spin-off could be in the worksremains. Speaking with TV Line, co-creatorJulie Plec– who is currently promoting her new Prime Video seriesWe Were Liars, an adaptation ofE. Lockhart’s novel of the same name – was asked about a potential spin-off happening.
“I have had ideas for moreVampire Diariesstoriessince we were doing the lastVampire Diariesstory. All anybody has to do is ask, and I will be there,” was all the co-creator offered, revealing a willingness on her part at least, to take us on yet another mystic journey. The original series was based on books byL. J. Smith, and aired for eight seasons, from 2009 to 2017, on The CW during its heyday. The Vampire Diariestells the story of two ancient vampire brothers from Mystic Falls, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), whose lives were ruled by their shared obsession with vampire Katherine and her human doppelgänger Elena (both played byNina Dobrev). Their shared attraction to this being saw them drawn into an epic tale of a frail co-existence between different factions of Mystic Falls' natural and supernatural inhabitants.

The franchise would expand in 2013 with the arrival ofThe Originals, a New Orleans-set spin-off about the world’s most powerful and oldest family of vampires, led by Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan). After a thrilling ride,The Originalsconcluded its five-season run in 2018. The franchise then returned to Mystic Falls forLegacies, which followed Klaus’ daughter Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) as she enrolled in a supernatural boarding school. That particular spin-off would end in 2022, as a casualty of Nexstar Media Group gaining a majority stake in The CW that same year.
Julie Plec Has Been Interested in a ‘Vampire Diaries’ Return for Some Time
Plec’s latest project is the aforementioned series,We Were Liars, which starsEmily Alyn Lind(Gossip Girl),Shubham Maheshwari,Esther McGregor, andJoseph Zadaasthe show’s four core teen characters: Cadence, Gat, Mirren, and Johnny, respectively. Gifted at developing teen dramas, this is not the first time the co-creator has mused about potentially returning toThe Vampire Diariesfranchise. During the conclusion ofLegacies, Plec said:
“There’s absolutely hope for the future. Brett [Matthews] and Kevin [Williamson] and I have an idea percolating in our brains that we just haven’t had the time to put down on the page yet. But we definitely want to do another branch of the tree. It’s just a matter of when, I guess.”
