Many comparisons have been made betweenWestworldandGame of Thrones. Some critics believe HBO’s latest series is doing the same for the sci-fi genre asThronesdoes for fantasy, whileWestworldbroke ratings records with its premiere. Recently,Game of ThronesauthorGeorge R.R. Martineven floated an idea of forming some sort of crossover between the two shows, and the idea has picked up so much steam that theWestworldshowrunners have addressed it.

Jonathan NolanandLisa Joyspoke toEWabout the idea, which Martin mentioned to them over dinner a couple months ago. Nolan said:

We love George and our daughter’s first trip anywhere in the world was out to Santa Fe for a screening of The Prestige at his theater, the Jean Cocteau. He’s a lovely guy and a stunning writer and it’s flattering he would encourage a crossover. We should be so lucky.

“I need to be believe that dragons are real,” Joy added, casting doubt on the possibility. “I want them be a real thing. So as much as I love George, I can’t lose that for myself!” Nolan, too, noted, “We’ve got an awful lot of material to cover just with Westworld, but you want to stay tuned…”

HBO’sWestworldseries is based on the 1973 film of the same name written and directed byJurassic ParkauthorMichael Crichton. In addition to the Old West-themed Westworld, the amusement park in the original film also featured a Roman World and a Medieval World. So, the idea would be to have a Westeros World with hosts channeling characters fromGame of Thrones.

This would probably never happen in a million years, considering a crossover like this would be one of the most shameless instances of self-promotion. But, like those theories aboutthe true identity of the Man in Blackandwhat’s at the center of the maze, it’s fun to think about.
