HBO has unveiled a brand new trailer for the highly anticipated drama seriesWestworld, and this thing continues to look kind of incredible. Inspired byMichael Crichton’s 1973 feature film of the same name, the hourlong series is described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin.” The show takes place in a massive real-world “theme park” run byAnthony Hopkins, which allows humans to enter the world of the Wild West and interact with its humanoid inhabitants. The idea is that humans can partake in sinful pleasures and even murder these humanoids, because they’re not real, but when they start to gain a consciousness about their true nature and their true purpose, big trouble ensues.

This is the most revealing look we’ve had at the series yet, as it fully pulls back the dynamic between Hopkins’ character and a humanoid played byEvan Rachel Wood, who appears to be the heroine key to what could certainly become a robot uprising. I’m especially enthused about the show delving into strong thematic issues like human nature and the morality (and dangers) of artificial intelligence, and with a killer behind-the-scenes team that includes showrunnersJonathan NolanandLisa Joyand executive producerJ.J. Abrams, hopes for this one are mighty high.
