Wickedhas been one of the biggest financial success stories of the year, and although the film has already lost the top spot to the record-breakingMoana 2, it recently hit yet another impressive box office milestone. After a strong second weekend in theaters and a sizeable second Tuesday in which the musical earned just under $7 million,Wickedhas officially reached the $275 million mark at the domestic box office. A good chunk of this comes from itssecond-weekend haul, where the film earned $81 million, only a 28% drop from the $112 million earnings on opening weekend.Wickedis already one of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year at the domestic box office, and the film is poised to enter the top five sooner rather than later.

Currently sitting in the #6 spot,Wickedneeds only $7 million to move into the top five highest-grossing movies of the year domestically and passDune: Part Two, which also hauled in $426 million internationally on its way to a worldwide total of $708 million.Wickedhas also pronounced itself a force to be reckoned with in the musical arena, becoming one of the top five highest-grossing musicals ever and also the highest-earing film to be based on a Broadway Play.Wickedhas even climbed in the rankings on its way to becomingone of the top 15 biggest hits ever for Universal, recently moving pastTwisters, the legacy sequel starringGlen Powellthat grossed $267 million domestically and $101 million internationally for a cumulative total of $369 million.

‘Wicked’ Is Only Part One in a Two-Part Story

Despite already being longer than the Broadway Play it’s based on,Wickedis only the first part in a two-part story.Wicked: Part Twois expected in theaters on June 19, 2025, and is already a contender to be one of the highest-grossing movies of next year. The film starsAriana Grandeas Glinda andCynthia Erivoas Elphaba, both of whom are expected to return for the sequel.Jeff Goldblum,Jonathan Bailey,Peter Dinklage, andMichelle Yeohare also expected to return, and the second installment will also be helmed byJon M. Chuwith a script fromDana Fox.
