Note: The following article is spoiler-free aside from a minor tease, but if you want to go in knowing absolutely nothing about the post-credits scene, turn back now.
In the post-Iron Manera of the comic book movie genre, post-credits scenes have become a standard way of teasing future films to come as part of standalone franchise or an interconnected universe. No longer are they just clever postscripts to the movies themselves, but instead have become a hosting ground for launching excitement for what’s next.
This was certainly the case forX-Men: Days of Future Past, which used its elaborate post-credits sequence to tease the arrival of the mutant Apocalypse in the follow-upX-Men: Apocalypse. And now forX-Men: Apocalypse, there is indeed yet another post-credits scene.
When Collider’s own Steve Weintraub caught up with writer/producer, Kinberg offered a tease of what theX-Men: Apocalypsepost-credits scene means for the future of the interconnectedX-Menfranchise:
“It’s a nod toward potentially a lot of different movies. I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there’s also another character that’s introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie.”
Hmm, that’s certainly a curious tease. Another possibility is theNew Mutantsmoviethat appears to be heating up.Hugh Jackman’s final go-around with the Wolverine character is currently filming withThe WolverinedirectorJames Mangoldat the helm, so it’ll be interesting to try to parse out exactly what this post-credits scene is teasing once we get a look at it.
